A unique reading event – Reading Hebron
by: Jason Sherman
Entrance fee (pay what you can at the door)

THE PLAY- READING HEBRON:This extreme work by Jason Sherman introduces audiences to the concept of Hebron and the roots of conflict. Reading Hebron is a bold experiment in ambivalence – an attempt to remove emotion from a loaded subject. In it, the main character, Nathan, splits himself in two, playing both the sage and the wise guy. Various critics compared this cold, academic piece to hallucinatory nightmare and commented on its attempt to answer complex political questions. It was lauded by the 1997 Governor General's Literary Award Drama Jury for its ambition and innovation.  The 1994 Hebron massacre in which a Jewish settler named Baruch Goldstein opened fire on a group of Muslims at prayer, murdering 29 of them before he himself was killed, prompted bitter debate in the larger Jewish community. Were Goldstein’s actions inexplicable and irrational, or were they a tragic – but predictable – consequence of Israel’s settlement policies?
